what is jessner peel? how to use, benefits, precaution, results

The Jessner Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel used to treat a variety of skin concerns like acne, melasma, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, and rough texture. It’s stronger than AHAs like glycolic or mandelic acid and typically performed in-clinic by dermatologists or licensed estheticians.

🧪 What’s in a Jessner Peel?

The classic Jessner peel contains a blend of three key ingredients:

  • Salicylic Acid (14%) – exfoliates and unclogs pores

  • Lactic Acid (14%) – hydrates and exfoliates

  • Resorcinol (14%) – breaks down rough, hardened skin and boosts penetration

Some modern versions replace resorcinol with gentler ingredients (e.g. kojic acid) for sensitive skin types.

🧴 How to Use (Professional Use Only Recommended):

Because it’s a stronger peel, it’s best applied in-office. Here’s how it typically goes:

  1. Cleanse & Prep: Skin is thoroughly cleaned and degreased with alcohol or acetone.

  2. Apply Peel: The solution is brushed on in layers. A tingling or stinging sensation is common.

  3. Layering: More layers = deeper penetration. A white “frosting” may appear.

  4. Post-Care: No need to neutralize. It’s left on, and skin peels over the next few days.

📆 Downtime: Peeling and flaking start around day 2–3, lasting up to a week.

Benefits:

  • Treats moderate to severe acne

  • Improves hyperpigmentation (sun damage, melasma, PIH)

  • Smooths fine lines and rough texture

  • Reduces blackheads and enlarged pores

  • Brightens dull, uneven skin tone

It’s one of the best peels for oily and acne-prone skin or those with stubborn pigmentation.

⚠️ Precautions:

  • Not for sensitive skin or active rosacea

  • Avoid retinoids, exfoliants, waxing, or shaving 5–7 days before and after

  • Do not pick or peel flaking skin

  • Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 30+ daily

  • Not recommended if pregnant, breastfeeding, or allergic to aspirin

👉 Contraindications: Active eczema, infections, open wounds, recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use

Expected Results:

  • Day 1–2: Tight, slightly red skin

  • Day 3–5: Visible peeling, dryness, and flaking

  • Day 6–7: Skin reveals a brighter, smoother, more even tone

  • 2–4 weeks: Clearer complexion, reduced pigmentation and breakouts

Multiple sessions (spaced 4–6 weeks apart) may be needed for best results.
